Dr. TerKeurst Learns New Procedure for Male Stress Incontinence

Dr. John S. TerKeurst, a urologist in Mountain Home, has been trained to perform a new procedure for mild to moderate stress incontinence among males. Most men with this condition are prostate cancer survivors, said Dr. TerKeurst; they experience leakage of urine during a sudden movement like sneezing or coughing and had few viable medical solutions until now.

“These men often restrict their activities, limit their fluid intake, become depressed, and often limit their lifestyles in an attempt to cope with this embarrassing condition,” said Dr. TerKeurst.

Dr. TerKeurst trained for the procedure last year at an American Medical Systems seminar presented at North Little Rock by Ron Kuhn, M.D., a North Little Rock urologist.

The new procedure, called the AdVance™ Male Sling System from AMS, involves placing a small, synthetic mesh sling inside the body through small incisions. The sling supports the urethra, restoring normal bladder control immediately. According to AMS, the procedure eliminates or reduces the possibility of urine leakage even through strenuous activities such as lifting or exercising.

The procedure is minimally invasive outpatient surgery, and the patient can resume normal, non-strenuous activities within a few days, Dr. TerKeurst said.

A physician and surgeon in Mountain Home since 1989, Dr. TerKeurst is board certified by the American Board of Urology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is on the active staff of Baxter Regional Medical Center. TerKeurst Urology Clinic at 124 Hwy. 201 North in Mountain Home treats males and females of all ages, offering preventive exams and urological procedures in the office.
